Second Quarter Earnings Season
As regular readers of the Investment Outlook know, our writing follows the calendar of quarterly earnings reports. The companies that we invest in report financial data and management commentary on a regular basis. This is colloquially called “earnings season”. It is an important part of our investment process because we can check-in on the progress of the companies that we own, as well as management’s expectations for the future of their business operations. Internally, we informally declare the “end-of-earnings season” when the results of the Canadian banks are published, and the last bank for the quarter reported on yesterday (Toronto Dominion Bank TD:CN). In the Canadian banking sector, we broadly saw strong results. In a strong quarter, such as this past one, we assess the quality of the outperformance of the individual businesses to determine if it stems from real improvement or non-recurring events that make the businesses look stronger than they are. This quarter, there was high quality earnings outperformance from multiple banks, with better-than-expected results across many of their business lines. Despite continued macroeconomic uncertainty, Canadian banks reported lower than expected credit losses, good expense management and continued strength from their high growth franchises in the wealth management industry.
Regular readers will recognize the aggregate sales data for North American companies noted in Figure 1.

- So far, 2,945 (94.5%) of North American companies have reported another quarter of very positive results. Only Energy was negative this quarter, and technology continues to show incredible year-on-year growth at 14.3% for this quarter.
- Sales accelerated again broadly across all industries with strong single to double digit growth. Forward sales expectations continue to be 5+%, which is very constructive, re-confirms our investment thesis and is the same as last year at this time.
“This means that” while we continue to see geopolitical and economic risk from economic data, companies still look constructive. As we have mentioned over the past several months, we remain committed to our investment management process and the companies that we own. There still remain pockets of value to work on… even in the extended market and amongst the sometime alarming headlines from the financial press.
